The club's origins can be traced back to a local gymnastics society called Gajret. In 1903, Gajret established its own football section which eventually became known as Zrinjski. However, due to political tensions during World War I, Zrinjski was disbanded.

The club was named after Mehmed-beg Kapetanović Ljubušak – also known as Veli Bey – a prominent figure from Mostar's history.
